Sacred Rivers of the Tirthan Valley - 2011 A 5-minute documentary depicting the unique micro-climate forest and riparian habitat of the Upper Seraj Valley. It was sent to the Himachal Pradesh High Court as part of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to protect the Hirub and Jibhi nallahs/streams from small hydro-electric dams (hydels). The Upper Seraj is the only remaining major river valley (the Tirthan River Valley) in the Kullu district without hydel development. The other ten valleys all have hydel development with varying degrees of negative environmental impact. In 2006 the part of the Tirthan River flowing out of the Great Himalayan National Park was protected from hydels but not its Upper Seraj region. The PIL was filed in 2007 by Envi-Saviors NGO (Jibhi) to ensure protection of the entire Tirthan River Valley watershed. |
